Today, I came accross many sites talking about different events happening in Egypt. reading comments on these events revealed to me a frightening truth!! We, the Egyptians, have become increasingly intolerant which is something we weren't before. Throughout our history, we have had our share of problems, but in general, we were a tolerant people. Events such as the expected rulling of the supreme court on the right of Bahaii Egyptians to print their religion on their ID cards -which is their constitutional right- is drawing very negative comments from large number of blog visitors. Evidence of such intelerance doesn't stop there, I have also recently posted the "Free Kareem" link, http://www.hrinfo.net/en/reports/2006/pr1122.shtml and while scanning blogger sites about this case, I was surprised to find most of the Egyptian bloggers -who cry day and night about freedom-, are happy that he is behind bars because he just revealed his thoughts and believs on his blog site. Some bloggers of course have adopted his case. Sara Ghorab site had a wonderful letter of support to Kareem however, the majority of bloggers are not showing the same support. These are only two events, but there are many more. Today, I watched on Al-Jazeera TV a mock trial made at the Cairo BAR Association (Lawers club) for the ministers of Culture and Transportation. I am sure that the leftist lawers wanted the trial to address the criminal negligance which resulted in the trajic loss of life on two occasions; the first is the infamous Ferry accident where a thousand Egyptians lost their lives, and the second is the Beni-Suef Theatre Fire where dozens of people where killed while watching a play, because the exit doors were locked, however, the cause was hijacked by the Islamist laywers! The trial of the min. of Culture turned into a witch hunt not for the reason of the fire (since he is ultimately responsible for theatres) but for his personal nostalgic comments about the vail. Not only these, but you can see it in all aspects of life, we are loosing our tolerance, I can saddly predict social unrest in Egypt very soon. By the way, it's official now, Egypt has joined the list of states enemy of freedom of expression on the Internet.
